Clinical Actors
PASJ & School of Nursing and Health Professionals
CLINICAL ACTORS (PAID OPPORTUNITY FOR2025-26)Want to get paid to act? Want to develop your character skills while furthering the social justice mission of the Performing Arts Department? In the fall of '24, we launched a new collaboration between USF's Performing Arts Department and the School of Nursing and Health Professionals. A small group of acting students were chosen last year to serve as clinical actors for the nursing program's simulation labs, and the feedback was tremendous! Through immersive learning (both in person and remote), the PASJ actors created over 130 characters during the 24/25 school year and even worked over the summer! These simulations helped to shape the Nurse Practitioner PhD students as well as the Mental Health PhD students.Patient simulations are designed to imitate a Primary Care visit between the nursing student and the actor/patient and to replicate real-world situations. The focus is on practicing both clinical and interpersonal skills. Each simulation can last from 30-45 minutes. (Nurse Practitioner simulations are in person and Mental Health simulations are on zoom.) 2-3 training sessions will be required for all student actors during the school year. There is compensation for the student actors for the training sessions as well as the simulations. In addition to working on your acting skills, you are helping to train the next generation of Health Care professionals.Contact Ken Sonkin at [email protected] to learn more. We are excited to share this year’s 15th Annual Critical Diversity Studies Forum on Thursday, Oct. 2, from 2:40–4:25 p.m. in the McLaren Conference Center. This year's theme is We Keep Us Safe.We Keep Us Safe is a call to action from community organizers, disability justice practitioners, abolitionists, queer, immigrant, and BIPOC communities who have demonstrated that we all deserve more safety and justice than our current systems provide. In our increasingly uncertain and volatile times, we invite all of us to create true safety by nurturing relationships of collective care, mutual aid, and solidarity while refusing binaries of us vs. them. We Keep Us Safe is an invitation to radically envision collective safety as a shared responsibility to love and protect each other, especially those most impacted by injustice. This year’s forum will feature Yosimar Reyes (writer, poet, performer, and Santa Clara poet laureate), Terisa Siagatonu (award-winning poet, teaching artist, mental health educator, and community leader), and Zachary Norris (former executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, author, organizer, and advocate).
